Last week, the British Pharmaceutical Association (BPA) said the drug was “potentially safe” and that Pfizer would not be required to pay the full cost of the trials.
The BPA said it was working with the pharmaceutical industry to identify alternative treatment options.
Pfizer’s chief executive, Alan Coelho, said: “We are disappointed with the results of the trials and are committed to developing new treatments.
“We remain committed to fighting this battle.
“The drug will continue to be available to men for up to the full potential of helping them achieve an erection suitable for sexual activity.
“We hope that this decision to sell Viagra will also help men who are suffering from other sexual problems to have other options.”
In April, Pfizer said it had launched a clinical trial for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in a man who has had three failed attempts to get an erection.
Pfizer said the trial showed that patients who were taking the drug had a “slightly reduced incidence of side effects”, compared with patients taking the drug alone.
The trial, published in theJournal of Sexual Medicinein July, showed that patients who had taken the drug in the first six months of treatment were twice as likely to have improved erections as patients who did not take the drug.
